Transpower is a State-Owned Enterprise and is owner of New Zealand's high voltage transmission grid (the national grid) which transmits electricity, and is also the System Operator. The System Operator is responsible for the co-ordination of the transmission of electricity across the national grid. Transpower plays a central role in the New Zealand electricity industry. It provides the link between generators, the distribution companies and direct supply customers, eg major industrial companies. Transpower also provides essential support for the electricity market and ensures the secure and reliable delivery of electrical energy from generators to consumer.
