The Turnover Estimate figures in Katalyst data are calculated using the methodology below. It's a calculated guess — real turnovers could differ by large amounts — but it's grounded in sound statistics. One of our regular users, a merchant banker specialising in business analysis and modelling, tells us the estimate performs very satisfactorily.

Using a custom report based on the Statistics New Zealand Annual Enterprise Survey, we obtain the annual income per employee for NZ businesses, broken down by ANZSIC industrial classification and employee range.

Combining that with our own knowledge of each business's employee range and ANZSIC industrial classification, we generate the Turnover Estimate figure for each business.
